This Update Could Make Spain's Digital Nomad Visa Easier for U.S. W-2 Employees
American employees working remotely for U.S. companies may now have a more practical route to Spain's Digital Nomad Visa thanks to recent developments surrounding the U.S. Certificate of Coverage (CoC).
The Certificate of Coverage is issued by the U.S. Social Security Administration (SSA) and confirms that an employee remains covered by the U.S. Social Security system while temporarily working abroad. Recent cases indicate that Spanish immigration authorities are accepting these certificates for eligible W-2 employees, making it possible to satisfy the visa's social security requirements without immediately contributing to Spain's system.
A Significant Change for U.S. Employees
For many American remote workers, social security requirements have been one of the biggest obstacles when applying for Spain's Digital Nomad Visa.
Historically, obtaining a Certificate of Coverage for remote work in Spain was difficult because the process was designed primarily for employees temporarily assigned overseas by their employer. More recently, immigration professionals have reported successful applications using Certificates of Coverage that reflect an employee's residence in Spain, opening new possibilities for qualifying applicants.
Who Could Benefit?
The development is expected to benefit employees who receive a W-2 from a U.S.-based company and plan to work remotely from Spain for a temporary period.
For these applicants, a Certificate of Coverage may allow them to remain within the U.S. Social Security system while meeting Spain's immigration requirements for the Digital Nomad Visa. In addition to simplifying the application process, it may also reduce the need to contribute to Spain's self-employed social security system during the period covered by the certificate.
Not Every Applicant Will Qualify
Although the update represents positive news for many employees, it does not automatically apply to every Digital Nomad Visa applicant.
Individuals who are self-employed or own the business they work for may face a different situation. Under Spanish regulations, business owners are often treated as self-employed regardless of how their company is structured in the United States. Because of this, obtaining or relying on a Certificate of Coverage can be considerably more complex.
Immigration professionals continue to recommend that applicants carefully assess which application route best fits their individual circumstances before beginning the process.
Preparation Remains Essential
Obtaining a Certificate of Coverage is not an immediate process.
Applications are submitted through the U.S. Social Security Administration, and processing can take several weeks. For that reason, individuals considering a move to Spain are encouraged to begin preparing this documentation well in advance of their intended relocation date.
Applicants should also ensure that all supporting documents—including employment evidence, financial documentation, and criminal background checks—remain valid throughout the visa process.
A Positive Development, but Not a Universal Solution
The growing acceptance of the Certificate of Coverage represents an encouraging development for many American remote workers hoping to relocate to Spain.
However, eligibility continues to depend on each applicant's employment structure, social security situation, and overall compliance with the Digital Nomad Visa requirements. While the process appears to be becoming more accessible for qualifying W-2 employees, applicants with more complex circumstances—such as company owners or independent contractors—may still need to explore alternative pathways.
As Spain continues refining the practical application of its Digital Nomad Visa rules, prospective applicants are encouraged to stay informed and begin preparing key documentation early to avoid unnecessary delays.
